With a green and sustainable development perspective, renewable energy, including wind and solar energy, is expected to be the fundamental source of the energy/electricity system in the coming decades, playing a crucial role in ensuring national energy security.
Clean energy is a crucial aspect of global efforts to minimize the impact of the energy industry on climate change and optimize the use of natural resources. Here are some significant global developments:
Solar energy is experiencing a boom with the decreasing costs of solar energy technologies. Countries like China, the United States, and India have heavily invested in solar energy and established large solar power stations.
Wind power stations worldwide are growing. European countries like Germany and Spain are leading in using wind energy to generate electricity.
Hydroelectric energy has been widely used for a long time and remains an important energy source in many countries.
Nuclear energy projects are developing in many places, especially in countries with high energy demands like China and India.
Biomass energy is often used in various industries and plays a significant role in reducing waste and reusing natural resources.
Like many other countries, Vietnam is committed to promoting clean energy development as a vital part of its national energy strategy. According to the Vietnam Clean Energy Association, global investment in clean energy has significantly increased since the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2015. The annual growth rate of clean energy investment in the five years after the Paris Agreement was just over 2%. In 2020, this rate increased to 12%, and clean energy investment in 2022 is expected to reach $1.4 trillion, accounting for nearly 60% of total energy sector investment.
The global investment in energy transition increased from $250 billion in 2010 to $500 billion in 2020, reaching $755 billion in 2021. In 2021, investments in renewable energy (mainly wind and solar power) attracted $366 billion for new projects, representing about 70% of total investments in new power projects. The first half of 2022 saw $226 billion invested in renewable energy.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), renewable energy is expected to become the main source of electricity production, supplying one-third of the world’s electricity by 2025. It is estimated that wind and solar power capacity will surpass that of coal in 2023 and thermal power in 2024.
Clean energy transition and renewable energy development have become dominant trends in global energy development, power generation, and are essential for sustainable and green development worldwide.
Solar Energy: Vietnam has ideal natural conditions for solar energy development. In recent years, large solar power stations have been built and put into operation, making Vietnam one of the rapidly developing solar energy markets.
Wind Energy: Wind energy is also developing in Vietnam, with wind power stations being constructed in areas with strong winds.
Hydropower: Vietnam has some significant hydropower projects such as the Son La and Hoa Binh projects, providing clean energy to various regions.
In recent years, especially the past 4-5 years, investment in clean energy and renewable energy (wind, solar) in Vietnam has made remarkable progress. Currently, the total capacity of large and small-scale renewable energy and hydropower plants in Vietnam is 43,126 MW, accounting for 55.2% of the total power capacity in Vietnam (78,121 MW). This includes 4,126 MW from wind power, 7,660 MW from rooftop solar, 8,904 MW from solar farms, 22,111 MW from hydropower, and 325 MW from biomass. Vietnam’s power system is the largest in the Southeast Asia region. In terms of solar power, Vietnam is among the top 10 countries with the highest installed solar power capacity.

The government plays a crucial role in investing and developing clean energy, and its activities may include:
Support Policies: The government can establish policies to encourage clean energy investment, such as tax incentives or long-term contracts for renewable energy sources.
Direct Investment: The government can directly invest in clean energy projects, including the construction and operation of solar or wind power stations.
Management and Operation: The government is responsible for managing and operating the energy sector to ensure stability and sustainability.
Scientific and Technological Development: The government can invest in research and development of new technologies to optimize the use of clean energy.
Clean energy plays a vital role in reducing the environmental impact of the energy industry and creating a sustainable energy supply for the future. In Vietnam and worldwide, efforts to invest in and develop clean energy are being promoted, with the government playing a crucial role in this process. The development of clean energy sources such as solar, wind, hydropower, and nuclear energy will play a significant role in building a brighter and more sustainable future for the world.
