Currently, Vietnam has become the country with the largest installed capacity of solar and wind power in Southeast Asia. With substantial growth in electricity production from solar sources, Vietnam has made a significant stride in adopting clean energy.
According to research by Shubham Rai from the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA) in India, Vietnam presently boasts the largest solar and wind power capacities in Southeast Asia. In the last four years, the proportion of solar power in electricity production has increased from almost zero to 11% in 2021.
By 2020, the total solar power capacity in Vietnam reached 16,500 MW, far surpassing the official target of 850 MW. Vietnam has also become the 10th largest producer of solar power globally, showcasing remarkable growth in the renewable energy sector.
The Vietnamese government has implemented various measures and policies to promote clean energy transformation. The National Development Strategy and the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) program are among the key initiatives. Furthermore, incentives such as tax exemptions for the import of raw materials, equipment, and clean energy products have facilitated the rapid progress of businesses.
Vietnam has established energy transformation partnerships worth USD 15.5 billion with several international partners, including the UK, the US, the European Union (EU), and Japan.
In line with the commitment to Net-zero, Vietnam aims to achieve the highest carbon emissions by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050, along with generating 60 GW of renewable energy by 2030.
